Prepare for outages before they arrive.
A portable generator must never power a home through an ordinary wall outlet. A suitable transfer arrangement prevents the generator and utility supplies from being connected together.
Essential loads first
List the circuits and equipment you want during an outage. A connection does not turn a small generator into a whole-house system.
Transfer equipment
An electrician can assess a compatible interlock or transfer switch and the appropriate installation scope.
Installed and explained
Include inspection responsibilities, labeling, and an explanation of the finished system. Follow the generator manufacturer operating and placement instructions.
Compare the full installation scope
Generator output, transfer equipment, panel compatibility, inlet location, circuit changes, and inspection scope affect the price.
Request an itemized written estimate. Clarify permits, utility work, access, cleanup, and approval for changes to the agreed scope.
Prepare for the first conversation
Provide the generator model, its output, and your essential loads. Never use a double-ended cord or connect a generator to a household receptacle.
